You know how important social distancing is during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many cities have implemented #socialdistancing by putting their residents on “lock-down.”

This includes cancelling live entertainment gatherings, sporting events, and closing bars and restaurants. Many employees have been sent home to work remotely. Even more were sent home to be laid off completely.

Overnight, Social Distancing Became our "New Normal"

Though this health crisis requires us to keep a physical distance from one another, is this actually a time for us to become “closer” than ever?

Here are 5 ways that social distancing could be the silver lining of this dreadful public health catastrophe.

  1. Spending Time Presently

When we are recommended to stay in our homes for long periods of time, we are able to spend it more presently with ourselves and those around us. During the hustle and bustle of our daily lives we tend to get lost in “what’s next” versus “what’s now.” Today, we get to enjoy quality time with our loved ones and practice staying present in activities that are keeping us occupied during our “lock-down.”

  2. Communication & Social Media

It can get lonely being "cooped up" day-in and day-out. People are using their quarantine time to stay connected to others by making phone-calls and video chatting. Social media is being used as a method to stay connected with friends and family, as well as for people to share their known and unknown gifts with the world. Restaurants are providing food essentials and delivery services, fitness professionals are streaming live workouts, and virtual classrooms have been set-up for students. All of these things are provided to keep us from feeling isolated, and to be kind to one another.

  3. Gratitude

When our normal lives have been halted, it is a time to reflect on the things that have been momentarily taken from us with much admiration and gratitude. Gone are the days when complaining about work was the norm. Take this time to think back to all the things you have taken for granted and try looking at them from a perspective of gratitude.

  4. Self-Reflection

What better relationship to work on than the one you have with yourself? While we are forced to slow down and live moment to moment, it's a good time for some self-reflection and working on the relationship that you have with YOU. The best time to reflect on who you are and who you want to become is in moments of stillness.

  5. We Find out What Really Matters

Times of panic and chaos provide you with the opportunity to see who shows up for you and what really matters in life. All those trivial things that were once so important to us seem so meaningless in times like these. We now see who and what truly matters to us.
